How to read a VDI static holder designation

The designation is the form, then the shank size, then the tool size. B1-30×20 is Form B1 (radial, right-hand, short) with a Ø30 mm VDI shank for a 20 mm square turning tool. E2-30×16 is a boring bar holder with a Ø30 mm shank for a Ø16 mm bar. E4-30/ER32 is an ER32 collet holder on a Ø30 mm shank. F-30MK2 takes a Morse taper 2 tool.

Static VDI is a published standard. The VDI shank and its serration are defined in DIN 69880 (now ISO 10889), so a static VDI25 holder is specified by size and form rather than by machine builder. What still needs checking is space on the turret — overhang, neighbouring stations and the tool-change path — and, for overhead and left-hand forms, which side of the turret the tool must cut from.

What is the difference between a static and a driven VDI tool holder?

A static holder clamps a turning tool, boring bar, drill or collet rigidly in the turret — nothing rotates inside the holder. A driven (live) holder takes rotary drive from the turret so a drill or end mill turns while the spindle is stopped. Most VDI turrets carry both.

Will a VDI25 static holder fit my turret?

If the turret takes VDI25 shanks to DIN 69880, the shank fits — the standard fixes the shank diameter and serration. Check the overhang and the neighbouring stations, and pick the right- or left-hand and overhead form for the side the tool cuts from. Send the machine model if you want Mongtec to check the layout before quoting.

Can Mongtec make a VDI holder to my drawing?

Yes. Forms A1 and A2 are soft blanks intended for special designs, and Mongtec quotes special holders from a customer drawing.
