How to identify a driven tool holder

A holder that needs replacing rarely arrives with its paperwork. The holder itself carries enough information to identify it — and anything it does not carry, the machine model usually does. This is the order a tooling engineer checks.

Start with the name plate

Most holders carry a plate or an engraving with the maker, an article or model number, and sometimes the gear ratio and maximum speed. Photograph it before cleaning — solvent can lift worn paint-filled engraving entirely. Even a partial number narrows the search: makers encode the turret interface and output type in the number more often than not. If you can read any characters at all, send the photo as-is.

No plate? The turret tells you half the story

The mounting is the most identifying feature of the holder. A cylindrical shank with a serrated wedge bar is VDI (DIN 69880) — measure the shank diameter: 16, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 60 mm. A flat face with a bolt circle and a location key is BMT — the size (BMT45/55/65/75/85) follows from the bolt pattern and pilot; see the BMT bolt pattern reference. Not sure which family you have? The dimensions that actually matter

For a cross-reference, these decide fit — measure what you can, photograph the rest: protrusion from turret face to collet nut, output type (axial along the spindle axis, radial at 90°), collet size (ER11–ER50, marked on the nut), coupling type on the drive end, and coolant routing. Gear ratio and maximum rpm matter for the application, not the fit — where they are unknown we quote conservatively and say so.

What a worn holder cannot tell you, the machine can

Machine builders routinely fit the same model series with different turrets. That is why we ask for the machine model and a turret photo — the combination resolves ambiguity that either alone leaves open. An incomplete answer is fine: Mongtec engineering works out the missing pieces from the machine model and confirms the result against your photos before anything is quoted.

The five-minute identification checklist

  1. Photograph the name plate (or where it was).
  2. Photograph the mounting — shank or bolt face.
  3. Photograph the whole holder next to a ruler or caliper.
  4. Note the machine make and model.
  5. Note the collet nut marking (ER size).

Can you identify a holder from photos alone?
Usually, when the mounting and the collet nut are visible and we know the machine model. Ambiguous cases get resolved against the turret drawing before we quote.
The name plate says a competitor brand. Does that matter?

What if I cannot remove the holder from the turret?
Photograph it mounted, plus the machine model plate. Removal is rarely needed for identification.
