How to cross-reference a competitor tool holder

“Can I replace this holder with yours?” is the most common question we get. The honest answer is always the same: it depends on four things, and all four are checkable.

Mongtec BMT axial driven tool holder, front view — cross-reference example

What a cross-reference verifies

1. The mounting — bolt pattern, pilot and key for BMT; shank and serration for VDI. Same nominal size does not always mean same pattern: machine builders vary the detail even within one interface family — see the BMT bolt pattern reference.

2. The drive coupling — the interface between the turret’s drive and the holder’s input. This is the piece most often assumed compatible, and most often not.

3. The output geometry — protrusion, centre height, output direction, collet size. These decide whether your current program and tooling carry over unchanged.

4. The duty — speed, torque, coolant. A dimensionally identical holder that is under-rated for the operation is not a replacement.

What we never do

We do not claim blanket interchangeability with any brand, and we do not quote from a nominal size alone. Every cross-reference states which of the four points above were confirmed and against what — your drawing, your photos, or the machine builder’s turret specification. If a point could not be confirmed, the quotation says so.

What to send

The competitor’s article number as it reads on the plate (partial is fine), the machine make and model, a photo of the holder mounted or loose, and a drawing if you have one. You do not need to know the Mongtec article number — matching it is our job, not yours. Not sure what you are looking at? See how to identify a driven tool holder.

What comes back

A Mongtec article proposal with the confirmed points listed, lead time and price — and where the honest answer is “repair the unit you have”, that instead. Brand-specific starting points: WTO, Heimatec, EWS, Eppinger, or the full alternatives index.

FAQ

Is a Mongtec BMT65 holder interchangeable with a WTO BMT65 holder?
Often the mounting matches; the drive coupling and output geometry still have to be checked. We confirm case by case and state what was verified.
How long does a cross-reference take?
With an article number and machine model, usually one working day. Photos of a worn plate can add a step, but rarely more than that.
Does the cross-reference cost anything?
No. The check is free; you pay only if you order the holder.
My brand is not on your alternatives pages. Can you still cross it?
Yes. The alternatives pages cover the brands we see most; the process is the same for any maker.
