Face milling loads a holder harder than anything else a machining centre does. The cutter is wide, every insert enters and leaves the cut once per revolution, and the resulting force is both large and cyclic — the exact excitation that finds any flexibility in the spindle-holder joint.
This is where HSK's face contact pays for itself most visibly. A taper-only joint under a wide interrupted cut has a small amount of angular compliance at the nose, and that compliance is what turns into chatter marks and dished surfaces. Clamping the flange against the spindle face removes it.
d is the pilot diameter and must match the cutter bore exactly — Ø16, 22, 27, 32, 40 or 60 mm, the standard bore sizes. L is the projection, catalogued from 50 mm to 300 mm on the same pilot.
Deflection at the tip goes with the cube of the overhang, so a 200 mm arbor is roughly eight times more flexible than a 100 mm one on the same pilot. Take the shortest projection that clears the fixture. When a long one is unavoidable, reduce the radial width of cut rather than the feed — radial force is what bends it.
The FMB40 and FMB60 sizes are catalogued with a pilot flange (dimensions D1 and a second thread m). The flange gives the cutter face contact of its own, which is what keeps a wide cutter running flat instead of dishing under load.
Dimension symbols are the catalogue's own and refer to the dimension drawing printed for each product. A dash means the catalogue does not print a usable value for that cell; those are confirmed in writing at RFQ. Where a table's printed header disagrees with its drawing, a note above the table says so.

At the spindle joint, yes — face contact removes the angular compliance there. Past the flange it is the same steel and the same cube law, so a long HSK arbor is still a long arbor.
