MPC — pipe centres

A pipe or a tube has no centre hole to put a point in; it has a bore, and what supports it is a cone bearing on the inside edge of that bore. The MPC series is that cone. MPC80 carries an 80° head in Ø59–200 mm, MPC60L a 60° head with the stepped two-level point that clears the tool, and the DK90 variant is the BT30-16L execution. All are head-rotation types at max 0.003 mm run-out, and all have a head whose accuracy can be adjusted and taken up with the nut.

MTH — heavy cutting

Catalogued for heavy cutting, and the reason is the same nut: adjustable to wobble of center axis by nut. A centre that has taken a heavy cut for a year develops play; on the MTH that play is taken up rather than replaced. Morse 3 to Morse 6, Ø49–126 mm head, max 0.003 mm. The G-prefixed article numbers are the larger-head execution on the same Morse 5 taper.

The Swiss-type entries in the tables below are the connection sleeves that let a live centre be used on a small sliding-headstock lathe, in MT and ST shank forms.

MHG — large grinding centres

These are a different class of object: a Ø178–310 mm body on a Morse 6, Morse 7 or 1:10 / 1:20 taper, carrying up to 25,000 kg of workpiece at max 0.005 mm run-out, with a contactless seal and a drain hole. They are for cylindrical grinders and large-part turning, and the catalogue notes that special sizes can be produced. The MHGN variant adds the ΦD1 flange dimension.

Article numbers — dimensions in mm

Dimension symbols are the catalogue's own and refer to the dimension drawing printed for each series. Quote the series name together with the model number — the same model number is used in more than one series, so "MSNN 2601001" identifies a part and "2601001" on its own does not. A dash means the catalogue does not print a usable value for that cell; those are confirmed in writing at RFQ.

Check the Morse taper of your tailstock before ordering. A centre is made for one taper and cannot be adapted without a sleeve, and a sleeve costs rigidity at exactly the point where you want it. Send Mongtec the machine make, model and tailstock taper with the RFQ.

Frequently asked

What angle should a pipe centre be?

It depends on the wall and the bore edge, not a rule. Mongtec catalogues 80 degrees (MPC80) and 60 degrees (MPC60L). Send the tube OD, ID and wall thickness with the RFQ and the right head is quoted.

Can the MHG take a workpiece heavier than 25,000 kg?

25,000 kg is the largest figure in the catalogue table, for the 021GH and MHGN120 sizes. The series is explicitly offered in special sizes — ask.

What is the nut on the MTH for?

Taking up wobble in the centre axis. It is a service adjustment, not a clamping nut: as the bearing wears under heavy cutting the nut restores the running accuracy.
