Mongtec standard CNC live centres

48 article numbers across the MSN, MLP, MHN series. The three series a turning shop buys by default: MSN for general CNC work, MLP as the low-cost version, MHN when the tool is fouling the centre body. Mongtec Precision is a Taiwanese brand, designed and engineered in Taichung, Taiwan.

Which of the three

All three are rotating (live) centres with a triplexed precision bearing stack and a special oil seal that keeps coolant and swarf out of the bearings. They differ in what they trade away.

MSN is the volume series — the catalogue calls it the most popular CNC standard turning centre. Run-out max 0.003 mm, Morse 2 to Morse 6, and the full set of head variants (C = with a coolant-through or collar feature, A = extended, AL/ALC = long-nose). If there is no reason to choose otherwise, this is the one.

MLP is the ECO version: the same triplexed bearing structure and oil seal, built to a lower cost for shops that need a rotating centre on every machine rather than the best one on one machine. Morse 4 and Morse 5 only.

MHN is the slim-body standard centre, and it is a shaft-rotating design — the whole centre shaft turns inside the body rather than only the head. The point of it is clearance: on a long slender part with a tool approaching close to the tailstock, an MSN body at Ø49–105 mm can be what stops the cut. MHN drops that to Ø34–58 mm.

Reading the variant letters

Within each series the suffix describes the head, not the taper: no suffix is the base head, C adds the ΦC feature, A is the extended head (ΦB dimension), AC combines the two, and AL / ALC are the long versions with the additional L6 and Φd1 dimensions. Every variant is available across the Morse sizes listed in its own table.

Article numbers — dimensions in mm

Dimension symbols are the catalogue's own and refer to the dimension drawing printed for each series. Quote the series name together with the model number — the same model number is used in more than one series, so "MSNN 2601001" identifies a part and "2601001" on its own does not. A dash means the catalogue does not print a usable value for that cell; those are confirmed in writing at RFQ.

Check the Morse taper of your tailstock before ordering. A centre is made for one taper and cannot be adapted without a sleeve, and a sleeve costs rigidity at exactly the point where you want it. Send Mongtec the machine make, model and tailstock taper with the RFQ.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between a live centre and a dead centre?

A live (rotating) centre turns with the workpiece on its own bearings, so there is no relative sliding at the point and no need for grease. A dead centre is fixed and the work slides on it — more rigid and more accurate, but it generates heat and needs lubrication. Mongtec builds both; the dead centres are the MDC and MMT series.

Which run-out should I expect?

Max 0.003 mm for MSN, MLP and MHN as printed in the catalogue. The high-speed MSH, MSNH and MSSH series are held to 0.002 mm.

Can I get a Morse 6 in the MLP series?

No. MLP is catalogued in Morse 4 and Morse 5 only. For Morse 6 use MSN, or MSW if the extra body length suits the machine.
